Sun Moon Lake Travel Guide - FAQs
How many days do I need to visit Sun Moon Lake?
1 Day: Only ideal for travelers departing from Taichung, with a driving time of about 1–1.5 hours.
In one day, you can take a lake cruise, explore Ita Thao Old Street for indigenous snacks, and ride a bike along the Shuishe to Xiangshan Visitor Center route.
If departing from Taipei, even with high-speed rail plus transfer time, it takes at least 3–4 hours one way, making a one-day trip quite rushed.
We do not recommend this arrangement, as we want travelers to spend most of their time enjoying the scenery, experiencing activities, and creating wonderful memories with their travel companions and family, rather than spending the majority of the day on the road.
2 Days 1 Night: For travelers from Taipei, a one-way trip to Sun Moon Lake takes about 3–3.5 hours. It’s recommended to plan at least two days and one night to explore the lake at a relaxed pace.
Sun Moon Lake is often at its most beautiful in the early morning, when a light mist rises above the water, creating a dreamlike, almost ethereal landscape.
On the first day, enjoy tea-making experiences with Sun Moon Lake black tea, a lake cruise, and sample indigenous cuisine at Ita Thao Old Street.
On the second day, go cycling, visit nearby temples, or take the Sun Moon Lake Ropeway to the Formosan Aboriginal Culture Village.
After your Sun Moon Lake itinerary, you can choose to return to Taipei or continue your journey southward for more travel experiences.
3 Days 2 Nights: For families who prefer not to change hotels frequently, staying two nights at a quality hotel or hot spring resort allows for a slower pace.
Day one can include tea-making, lake cruise, and Ita Thao Old Street.
Day two can feature cycling, temple visits, or the ropeway to Formosan Aboriginal Culture Village, with time to enjoy hotel facilities.
On the third day, consider visiting the Puli Paper Factory to experience traditional papermaking.
If you are returning to Taipei, you can stop in Taichung City along the way, or continue your journey southward for more travel experiences.

- Book the Tour: 3-day Sun Moon Lake, Tainan and Kaohsiung Tour from Taipei
Can I visit Sun Moon Lake from Taipei in one day?
It is possible, but we do not recommend it.
When Is the Best Season to Visit Sun Moon Lake?

Another popular period is September to November, when Sun Moon Lake hosts the Fireworks and Music Festival on selected weekends (The dates for 2026 have not yet been announced). This is one of the lake’s peak travel seasons, attracting many visitors.
However, travelers should be aware that around the Mid-Autumn Festival every year, Sun Moon Lake will hold the The annual Sun Moon Lake International Swimming Carnival. This is the busiest time of the year—the crowds are large, hotel prices increase, and accommodations often sell out quickly. It’s best to avoid this period if you prefer a more relaxed experience.

Some travelers prefer taking the High-Speed Rail (HSR) to shorten the travel time. However, after arriving in Taichung, you still need to transfer to another vehicle to reach Sun Moon Lake. Considering waiting times at stations and transfers, the total travel time is often similar to driving directly from Taipei. On the other hand, managing luggage during transfers can also be exhausting.

For very young children who cannot ride: Rent a bicycle with a child seat so the parent can carry them safely.
For older children who cannot ride independently: A tandem bike with a parent is an option. However, some sections of the Sun Moon Lake bike path are uphill or narrow, which can make tandem biking more challenging. Therefore, if the person riding in the front does not have sufficient cycling skills, we do not recommend using a tandem bike.
For children who can ride on their own: Rent an appropriately sized bike at the rental shop.
Safety gear: Bike rental shops provide helmets—make sure your child wears one at all times. Knee and elbow pads are not usually provided, so bring your own if needed.

Choose flat and safe routes, such as the Xiangshan (Shoreline) Bike Path.
Remember sun protection and stay hydrated throughout the ride.

Sun Moon Lake boat cruises usually operate until around 5:30 PM each afternoon. Therefore, during the summer months, the cruise schedule does not align with sunset time, making it difficult to enjoy the sunset from the boat.
In winter, when sunset occurs earlier, there is a chance to see the sunset on the last boat of the day. However, this option is not recommended, as missing the final cruise can cause significant inconvenience with transportation and onward arrangements.
If you would like to enjoy the sunset from a boat on Sun Moon Lake, a private boat charter during the winter season can be considered.

However, after the 2024 earthquake, the geology in Taroko Gorge has become highly unstable. Frequent rockfalls and ongoing long-term repair work have resulted in multiple traffic restrictions. If travelers miss the scheduled times to pass through these controlled points, they may face long delays.
